Each grain of sand on the beach mirrors our ecosystem. On the day of the event, under the blazing sun, BXB team members moved across the beach and rocky areas, sweating as they collected litter, fulfilling a pledge to protect the environment. The waste collected reduced hazards for seabirds and marine life and brought into focus the environmental impacts of human habits.
Within just an hour, our team gathered over 21 kilograms of marine litter, a weight equivalent to the carbon emissions from driving 500 kilometers—from Kaohsiung to Miaoli and back. But the true impact lay in the heightened awareness: we grasped the environmental damage caused by humans, which, in turn, fueled our resolve. Throughout the clean-up, team members voiced reflections such as:
“I’m telling my kids to stop using plastic straws.”
“Why would someone leave a lighter here?”
“This abandoned oil drum is so heavy two people can’t lift it…”
“The number of straws and bottle caps is overwhelming!”
These reflections left a lasting impact, enhancing BXB’s environmental mission with deeper significance and influencing the team’s attitudes toward sustainable living.
Marine Waste is a Reflection of Human Life—A Cycle that Returns to Us
The most common waste found on the beach included hidden plastics, discarded fishing nets, and weathered styrofoam, along with syringes, lighters, and tire fragments—revealing a blatant disregard for the environment. Each year, approximately 12.7 million tons of plastic enter our oceans, a volume equal to 200 Taipei 101 buildings in weight. The World Economic Forum warns that, without intervention, the ocean’s plastic waste will outweigh fish by 2050. This plastic eventually degrades into microplastics, entering our ecosystem’s food chain, and ultimately, ending up on our dinner tables—an urgent reminder that every harm inflicted upon the environment ultimately returns to us.
